DIY Christmas Ornaments and Present Ideas

When it comes to the holidays, homemade present and Christmas ornaments create lasting memories that will be enjoyed for many more seasons to come. If you are a bit stuck in the creativity department this year, try any of these four great DIY ideas to get a jumpstart.

1. How to Turn a Blank Ornament into a Rhinestone Masterpiece (Source)

Starting with a blank canvas is the best way to bling to maximum capacity. Here’s how to turn a plain old ornament into an eye-catching decoration that will hold a special place on your tree for years to come.

What You Need:

  • Plain plastic or glass ornaments
  • Mod Podge (clear)
  • Paint Brush
  • Glitter, confetti, rhinestone ribbon and rhinestones of your choice
  • Painting Tape
  • Funnel
  • Hot Glue and Glue Gun

Directions:

Apply painters tape to the section you don’t want glitter on. Typically you will want to make a straight line across the center so half will be glitter and half will be plain. Using the paint brush, apply Mod Podge to the area without the tape and sprinkle with glitter. After letting the glue stand for a few minutes, remove the painters tape and there you have it!

If you prefer the rhinestone look (and really who doesn’t?) apply rhinestone ribbon around your ornament by cutting two rhinestone ribbon strips. Apply this around the ornament with your hot glue gun as if you were wrapping a package with ribbon.

Another great addition to the tree is to add confetti to the ball in the design of your choice. Do this by putting a dab of the glue on the back of each once. Once done, apply Mod Podge over the entire ball with a paint brush.

Once your ornaments are done, cut a pretty piece of ribbon to string your ornament on the tree.

2. Simple Rhinestone Recycled Ornament Craft (Source)

After creating these beauties, you will never look at your jar lids as trash again. Breathe new life into your recycled lids with these simple (get gorgeous) ornaments.

What You Need:

  • Recycled metallic lids
  • Mod Podge Gloss
  • Mod Podge Dimensional Magic
  • Brush
  • Rhinestones
  • Power Drill
  • Ribbon

Directions:

Using your power drill, create a very small hole in the lid. Next, take the brush and apply a thick layer of the Mod Podge around the inside part of the lid and then begin to add your rhinestones. Whether they are facing up or down this will create an element of dimension and look great on your tree. Once you have added all the rhinestones you would like to use, you will need to wait for the glue to dry. Once it is, use Dimensional Magic to cover all the jewels in glue. Leave it overnight and you will see it dries perfectly clear and resembles resin. Thread the ribbon through the hole you drilled and you’ve got yourself a great recycled decoration.

3. DIY Showoff – Rhinestone Christmas Star Ornaments (Source)

Christmas star ornaments have been a staple for decades but now it’s time to put your own spin on this old standby.

What You Need:

  • Bright gold Rust-oleum spray paint
  • Gold paper ornament star
  • Rhinestones
  • Glue
  • Mod Podge (Gloss)

Directions:

Use your spray paint to color your paper star ornament. Decide on a pattern to apply your rhinestones. Once you know how you would like it to look, add a small amount of glue on the back of the rhinestone and press them on to the ornament. After you have done this, apply a very thick coat of the Mod Podge and let them dry overnight.

4. DIY Christmas Present Idea-Rhinestone Embellished Scarf and Gloves (Source)

Christmas presents that you created add a special touch to your gifts that the recipient will love. Embellishing a scarf and hat set is a great way to do this.

What You Need:

  • Hats, gloves, scarves (or whatever you would like to embellish)
  • Rhinestones (various colors and sizes create an interesting look)
  • Jewelry Glue

Directions:

Layout your material and place your assorted rhinestones in the pattern of your choice. Next, take a photo so you will know where you want to place the stones. Add a dab of jewelry glue to the back of each rhinestone and apply them to the fabric. Press slightly and allow to dry.
